Legendary leader moved by support

31/ 1/2003

SALFORDIANS were thanked for the support they gave the New York people after the September 11 attacks when two former mayors shook hands.

Cllr Jim King - Mayor of Salford during the 2001 terror strikes - met legendary New York leader Rudi Giuliani and told him how the city had done its bit to pledge support.

The Broughton councillor waited over an hour to meet the political giant, who was signing copies of his autobiography, Leadership, in Manchester's Waterstone's store last week. Cllr King told the former New York Mayor how he wrote to him expressing Salford's support during the difficult time just after September 11.

The letter was accompanied with a book of condolence signed by thousands of Salfordians. And despite a huge queue building up behind the two politicians, Mr Giuliani took the time to thank Cllr King and write a message in his copy of the book.

Cllr King told us: "He genuinely seemed quite moved when I told him I'd written to him. I have a lot of admiration for him. I think anyone interested in leadership can learn a lot from him.

"He came into full flower after September 11 but people involved in politics knew about him long before, largely because of what he did to cut crime and sort the budget out in New York. The city was a mess for a long time and he came in with new ideas and challenged the established view that nothing could be done about it."
