Hope nurse is awarded OBE

2/ 1/2003

HOPE Hospital's nursing boss is celebrating the New Year after being awarded the OBE.

Dorothy Knupfer, executive nurse director at Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, was given the award in the New Year's Honour's List for services to nursing.

Dorothy, who was born at Hope Hospital where she now manages nearly 2,000 nurses, described the honour as being 'a bolt from the blue,' but added she was 'delighted' at the news.

Although she is the most senior nurse at the hospital she regularly works shifts on wards, and even recently provided nursing care in the former Yugoslavia.

Dorothy has worked in nursing for 38 years, including a decade in nurse education.

She told us: "I started my nursing career at the old Salford Royal and I am proud to be a Salfordian. I have worked with some very special people throughout my career and all my successes have been as a result of being part of a marvellous team.

"Nursing is a privilege and that's something I regularly tell the students - we should never forget that."
