Dougie digs deep for kids

27/12/2002

DESPITE being time to celebrate his 65th birthday, Irlam man Dougie Shaw decided to put terminally ill children first.

Dougie, a popular figure around Irlam and Cadishead, asked friends and family to donate cash for the Destination Florida charity instead of buying him presents, at a party held at Irlam Steel Social Club.

The big hearted gesture had guests digging deep, and chipping in a whopping £850 for Destination Florida.

Fundraiser Alan Pimlott told the Advertiser: "The charity has been going for 15 years. We take terminally ill children to Florida for the adventure of a lifetime. We can't thank Dougie enough for his generous support."

Steel Club steward Derek Styles added: "Dougie is a great bloke with a big heart. It's fabulous that he has put others first on what after all was his special day."

As if that wasn't enough Dougie of Fairhills Road, Irlam, chipped in with another £50 to bring the total for Destination Florida up to £900.

He told the Advertiser: "I would like to thank everyone for their support, I just wanted to help out with the fundraising for terminally ill kids."
