Trees' new lease of life

27/12/2002

WONDERING what to do with your Christmas tree on Twelfth Night when the fairy lights go out and the tinsel is removed?

Look no further than Salford Council's environmental services Christmas Tree recycling scheme.

The good news is that the trees will get a new lease of life - as bark chippings!

Said Cllr David Lancaster, lead member for environmental services: "Most people are left with the problem of how to get rid of their Christmas tree, and often have to make a special trip to the local tip.

"Our scheme solves the problem - and we dispose of the trees in an environmentally friendly way."

All residents have to do is 'phone Salford Council's call centre on 909 6500 and ask for their Christmas Tree to be removed, giving their name and address.

Then it is simply a matter of leaving their tree outside on Monday, January 6, ready for collection.

The trees will be removed over a five-day period and taken to Buile Hill Park, where tipping and chipping will take place from January 13.

The chippings will be spread on flower beds to protect bulbs and keep down weeds.

Added Cllr Lancaster: "This scheme has been run before - but local people are becoming much more environmentally aware and we hope that there will be a big take-up of the service this year."

Registration, which will be advertised via wheelie bin stickers, is open until January 6. Details will also be available on the Salford Council wsebsite - www.salford.gov.uk
