Salford talent lands top DJ slot at Radio 1

A Salford lad is number one after landing one of the country's best radio slots.

Wes Butters is looking forward to a very happy new year as he prepares to take over from Mark Goodier presenting Radio One's chart run-down on Sundays.

The 23-year-old was chosen in a national search for the cream of the country's DJ-ing talent and will hit the airwaves in February.

He has already got plenty of experience under his belt, having worked for radio stations in the North West and at Galaxy 105 in Newcastle.

But there will be extra pressure on the youngster as he will be competing with Goodier, who is leaving the corporation after 15 years to host a rival to the traditional chart show.

The veteran DJ, who recently presented his last BBC music run-down, will be presenting the UK's first interactive chart, the new Smash Hits Chart Show which will be aired at the same time as Radio One's chart.

The BBC slot is now being filled by guest presenters such as Chris Moyles, Emma B and Jo Whiley, before Wes takes command.

Wes said the programme was a 'huge deal' and added: "Going to work for Radio One is the big gig and I can't wait to get started.

"It's going to be amazing being the person counting down the chart and revealing to the nation what the official UK number one is each week."
