Glimpse of glorious past to mark dawn of club's new future

IT IS perhaps fitting that at a crucial crossroads in the history of Swinton Lions, fans can get a glimpse of the club's glorious past.

Club historian Steve Wild has lovingly compiled over 200 photos detailing the highs, the lows and the magical players who have graced the blue and white of Swinton.

From the legendary Jim Valentine in the 1880s to the famous 1928 team who captured "all five cups" and the glory days of the 60s with Albert Blan, Alan Buckley and Ken Gowers - the book reminds every Swinton fan just why the club is worth saving.

Steve, who was instrumental in setting up the Swinton Lions Supporters' Trust last season, said people tended to forget just how successful the club had been in the past.

He told The Advertiser: "I think it's important that the history of this club is preserved. If I can contribute towards that, then I'm happy to go along with it. The book is well-timed because we reached a crossroads last season.

"It marks a new beginning for the club with a new ground, new administration and hopefully a prosperous future."
