Day of memory and reflection

15/11/2002

TRIBUTES from young and old, former servicemen and civilians were paid to Salford's heroes on Remembrance Sunday.

Salford's Mayor, Cllr Ben Wallsworth, who won the Military Medal for his service on the beaches of Dunkirk, was at the Cenotaph in Salford.

His council colleagues paid theirrespects at a service at the War Memorial in Princes Park, Irlam, which was attended by ex-servicemen and conducted by the Rev Jonathon Tallon, Vicar of St Mary's, Cadishead.

The service at Eccles was conducted by Canon Ted Crofton after which a parade marched past through the town and on to the Royal British Legion Club in Chadwick Road.

Poignant memories of a father and grandfather were remembered in a poem written by Roderick O'Connor, aged 53, of Hiley Road, Brookhouse.

Mr O'Connor, who attended the Eccles service with his son Andrew, aged 14, wrote the poem for his father who served in the King's Liverpool regiment on the Somme in the First World War.

A Service of Remembrance was also held at the War Memorial in Walkden, conducted by the Rev. Christopher Bracegirdle.
