Hats off to family fun

FAMILIES stepped back in time at Salford Museum and Art Gallery on Sunday.

Youngsters had the chance to try their hands at making top hats, bonnets, and rag rugs, dressing up in Victorian costumes and learning about Salford's past in the new Life Times gallery.

The old fashioned sweet shop in Larkhill Place was open for the day, complete with museum assistant Geoffrey Bloor in period shopkeeper dress serving up the goodies to visitors.

Organiser Jo Clarke said: "It was a nice day and lots of people went up to the Life Times gallery. The hat making was very popular."

The fun days are held on the last Sunday of every month. There is a permanent collection of Victorian costumes for adults as well as children to dress up in - including bonnets and dresses for girls, and top hats and canes for boys.
