SPARKLING wine and canapes may seem a long way from the gritty streets of Salford seen on BBC 1's fly-on-the-wall documentary, 'Life of Grime', but that's just what the city's newest celebrities sampled.

The stars of the show, which aired its last episode on Monday night, have attracted millions of viewers, thanks to the in-depth look at exactly how Salford's grime busters keep the city clean. The newly made celebs even had their own glitzy bash courtesy of proud Salford mayor Cllr Ben Wallsworth.

One of the show's famous faces, drain surgeon, Mike Thomas said: "It was a really good laugh to make. I'm very pleased with the end result because it's put Salford in the picture which is exactly what we fight for."

Mike even managed to have his own minor celebrity strop saying: "The crews did get in the way at times, but only in the nicest possible way."

Delighted celeb SRB driver Brian Livesy added: "It showed us clearing and sweeping Langworthy and Seedley because it's a regeneration area and we specialise there. It was quite enjoyable and fun, but I was a bit nervous. It showed that Salford has a caring work force."

Senior environmental health officer, Joan Kinghorn-Hooper, famed for her ruthless treatment of any less than hygienic take-away managers, added: "The camera crews didn't interfere at all in our everyday working lives, but it was interesting to see the things they were focusing in on. It was definitely enjoyable and the people both making it and watching it found it interesting." She joked: "I was a bit disappointed I didn't get a make-over though, they just let us carry on as normal."
