Vicar jailed for gun possession loses appeal

28/ 6/2002

THE vicar jailed after admitting he would shoot burglars who invaded his vicarage must remain in prison.

The Rev Michael Daggett, 54, yesterday lost his appeal against a four-month sentence for keeping a loaded handgun in his bedroom.

He had said he would use the .22 Derringer to "do what needed to be done'' after disturbing burglars nine years ago.

Daggett was jailed despite pleas for mercy by parishioners and Church of England colleagues. Police found the antique gun in a grandfather clock at Holy Rood vicarge in Swinton.

Daggett, a 32-stone American who was ordained in the UK in 1986, said he did not think the firearm was illegal. But on Tuesday at Salford magistrates court, a district judge told Daggett it was his public duty to send him to jail.
