Beat bobbies bring calm back to Kersal

20/ 3/2002

BOBBIES are to stay on the beat in Kersal after residents insisted they felt safer with the boys in blue close by.

Kersal has seen more community police officers patrolling the streets for the past four months after residents appealed for more protection. Some claimed they were too scared to leave their homes after dark, but say they now feel much safer with the introduction of the high-profile police initiative.

The scheme is being funded through the £53M New Deal money which has been awarded to the area in an attempt to give it a new lease of life. Police have confirmed they will be walking the beat until at least September.

Sgt Neil Broadhurst said: "Certain types of crimes have gone down because of the police presence and more things have been reported due to easier access to officers.

"In the main it's been positive and we have tried to put more officers out in the day as well as during the night so there is more of a presence for the elderly.

"We have been approached by people who have said thank you. People seem to be feeling safer, more confident and happier."
