IRLAM'S animal sanctuary Animals in Distress may be home to dozens of cuddly puppies and kittens like the one pictured here, but they have steadfastly refused to hand them over this week.
Maintaining a policy that pets are not just for Christmas, the cash-strapped centre instead held on to their gaggle of guests and raised money by opening their doors for the first time since the foot and mouth crisis.
Cash will be used to buy food and bedding for the cats and dogs, who will all be staying put over the festive period.
Explained manager Wendy White, pictured with one of their many kittens: "We don't feel it's acceptable to give young animals as Christmas presents but adult ones need all the chances they can get."
