KEITH Mann: "Exciting times"

New school is a top of the class decision

24/12/2001

BROUGHTON school children are resolving to have a successful New Year thanks to a decision to move their primary to a new state-of-the-art site.

Pupils at Brentnall Primary in Bury New Road will be moving to the former Parkes Field Primary School site in Northumberland Street when the new school term starts in January.

The Bury New Road site has been unsuitable for pupils for some time as it is too large and does not have up-to-date facilities.

Teachers say the move is vital for the pupils and are delighted with the decision

Headteacher Chris Marriott said: "I think it's going to be very exciting for them, like a new adventure and a fresh start in a new building that will support their education."

Meanwhile, council spokesman for education Cllr Keith Mann said: "We believe this is the best solution all round.

"The building was in such a bad state that it was no longer economically viable to repair it, so moving to the Northumberland Street site made sense all round."

Cllr Mann added: "With new facilities and new surroundings this is an exciting time for the children and an excellent opportunity to continue their education in a school that is much better suited to their needs."

The Parkes Field site became available when the school moved to the new Springwood Primary which caters for special needs right across the city.

The school is smaller than the current site as numbers attending Brentnall are no longer enough to fill the school.

Mr Marriott added: "It's seemed like a long time waiting for a decision so we are very much looking forward to it, especially as the community of Broughton will have a school that will be efficient and will go with the work they are doing."
