Gunman targets driver in rush hour

20/12/2001

A THUG tapped on a van window with a gun in a chilling attack on the driver who had stopped to answer his mobile phone in Higher Broughton during rush hour.

The 36-year-old van driver, from Bury, was on his way home when he pulled over near the old Rialto cinema in Bury New Road at 5.30pm on Wednesday December 12 to answer his phone.

A gang of villains surrounded his vehicle and one of the thugs began tapping against his window with the pistol.

The terrified driver started to race off as the yobs tried to smash his window with the gun.

The man with the gun was described as white, wearing a black coat with the hood up and a scarf pulled across his face.

There were two other males with him and they were all seen running up Upper Camp Street shortly after the attack.

The driver, who was not hurt, drove back to Bury where he reported the incident to police.

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to call police on 856 5040 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
