OAP suffers broken hip in mugging

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was left with a fractured hip after she was mugged outside of her home.

The 79-year-old was entering her flat complex in the Broughton Park area of Salford at 3.30pm yesterday (Monday) when she was approached by a male teenager who grabbed her shopping bag. The woman was unable to release her grip on the bag and was subsequently pulled to the floor at force.

The woman was then taken to North Manchester General Hospital where she is currently awaiting surgery for a hip fracture.

The teenager is described as having fair hair and was wearing a blue top.

Detective Inspector Stephen Bell said: "This is a despicable crime. The elderly lady was getting ready and looking forward to her Christmas with family in Blackpool. Instead this 79yr old will now be spending her Christmas in hospital in a great deal of pain, all for just a couple of pounds which was stolen from her in a totally unprovoked and sickening attack.

"It is imperative that this person is found and punished for his selfish and thoughtless actions."
