Brothers are first class

29/11/2001

IRLAMS O'TH' HEIGHT'S very own first class male is preparing to make his last delivery.

After 50 years Dennis Ball is ready to hang up his postbag and take a well-earned retirement.

But letter writers needn't worry, for brother Graham is still pounding the streets for the Royal Mail after 42 years.

The pair of posties, who have kept it in the family, have chalked up almost 100 years in the business. And it is Dennis, aged 65, of Delamere Avenue who is the first to call it a day. Next week he retires after being awarded a long service medal.

He said: "I have always been one for the fresh air, so that is why I joined Royal Mail in 1951, even though the pay was not very good.

"But I have enjoyed myself all the same and would continue until I was 70, given half a chance."

Dennis plans to wait until after Christmas before deciding on a part-time job.

Meanwhile, brother Graham keeps the family flag flying on his round in Swinton.
