LISTED buildings in Salford are to be captured on film so they can appear as part of the English Heritage's Images of England project.

All the buildings are of historic or architectural interest. A number of buildings have yet to be photographed so English Heritage are hoping members of local camera clubs or The Royal Photographic Society to come and help compile the project.

By the end of 2002, a comprehensive collection of up-to-the-minute images of the area's built heritage will form one of the world's largest free online picture libraries.

Listed buildings in Salford include the former nurses home, now the Working Class Movement Library on Salford Crescent: Museum House, Wellington Road, Eccles and the Charles Halle Memorial in Weaste Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Salford.

The project is run by the National Monuments Record, the public archive of English Heritage, and aims to make information and images of England's 370,000 listed buildings accessible via the internet.

Volunteer photographers take a simple photograph of the exterior of each building and will appear on the Images of England website in association with the official list description of the structure.

Images of England project manager, Victoria Fenner, said: "Since the photographic survey started we've had a terrific response from our photographers but there are more still buildings to photograph. Together they are creating a unique millennial photographic record of England's heritage for the future."

Some of the early images taken for Images of England are currently displayed on the project's prototype website, www.imagesofengland.org.uk.

Images of England is backed by a £3.1m grant, awarded in 1999, from the Heritage Lottery Fund, through the Millennium Festival Fund. Other support comes from the The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and English Heritage.
