Terry's fox hunt plea to Number 10

30/ 1/2001

WORSLEY MP Terry Lewis says a ban on fox hunting must be made law before the next general election.

The Labour MP, who is at the forefront of a campaign to ban hunting, also claims Prime Minister Tony Blair is a "stumbling block" in making sure the Government makes good its promises to put an end to the sport.

The Campaign to Protect Hunted Animals is demanding the Government introduces a bill against blood sports by the end of this session. Members of the group, supported by the RSPCA, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the League Against Cruel Sports, recently posed with a banner containing the names of 412 MPs who have supported the ban, which they delivered to Margaret Beckett, secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs.

Terry said: "As far as I'm concerned its time for the Prime Minister listened because it seems to me and to others involved in this campaign that Number 10 is the stumbling block. We've got to keep the pressure on and we've got to make sure that we keep this pledge.

"If we don't do it as we've promised in two consecutive manifestos, and get this on the statute book before the next election, we'll be letting a lot of people down. We'll be accused of saying one thing and doing another."
