Gastric flu hits home

29/ 1/2001

SALFORD'S schools, nursing homes and offices are under attack from two separate flu bugs.

Sufferers are battling not only with the usual respiratory flu but also a highly infectious gastric version. Already one Eccles school and a Swinton nursing home have fallen prey to the one which closed down Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow last week.

Dr Rosemary McCann from Salford Health Authority said although highly infectious, gastric flu was a regular winter occurrence. Symptoms include vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

She said: "It is airborne and although symptoms may last one or two days, it can spread rapidly and outbreaks are frequently reported in the winter. We do not know why it seems more prevalent during some winters. Essentially it is self-limiting and people of all ages quickly recover."

Dr McCann said if parents thought their child might be ill, to keep them at home and give them plenty of liquids.
