Charlestown on song for Games glory

28/ 1/2001

A CHARLESTOWN primary school has been chosen to serenade sports stars when they arrive for the Commonwealth Games in July.

Pupils from St George's CE Primary will formally greet the athletes by singing to them during the welcoming ceremonies.

Each welcome ceremony, taking place between July 16-24, will involve athletes of up to four countries at a time and will last 45 minutes.

Jane Tyers, acting head of St George's, said: "We will be working hard to ensure we're all in fine voice for the Commonwealth Games. It's great to be part of this international sporting spectacular."

Salford councillor John Warmisham, a school governor, added: "I'm really proud of the school. Over the last few years, it has gone from strength to strength. Staff and children should be delighted that they have been chosen for this honour. I'm sure they will be singing from the rooftops."
