Racecourse plans rejected

PLANS for a racecourse complex on green belt land outside Salford have been rejected by the Government.

The Salford Forest Park development near Worsley was to include a hotel, nature reserve and golf course to be built by Peel Holdings.

But the £100m plan was opposed by the city council on the grounds it would increase noise and traffic and destroy green belt land.

The whole scheme was then called in for further examination and has been rejected by Communities Minister John Denham.

Councillor Derek Antrobus, lead member for planning at Salford City Council, said: “Whilst the council’s planning panel always recognised that Peel’s proposals offered some economic and social benefits to Salford, it also recognised that the location of the scheme, lying in the green belt, posed some particular difficulties, as by definition, most development in the green belt is deemed to be harmful.

“The Inspector and the Secretary of State clearly shared these concerns and have found that harm outweighs any benefits in this case and have accordingly dismissed the appeal.”

Readers - and residents of Worsley and the surrounding areas - may also be interested in the proposed, nearby, waste reprocessing centre at the former Mitchell and Shackleton site Green Lane, Monton.

The relevance to residents in the Worsley area is that waste-transporting vehicles would, of course, pass through the area upon leaving the motorway and onwards to the waste reprocessing destination.

Never mind the jobs this would have created, think of the land and the local residents.... It would have been awful, especially with the extra traffic problems....... Leave the land as it is - are the scouts not still there anyway????? I know they have a long lease on some of the land that has quite a while to go yet.? Maybe it was the old established (protected) redwoods or maybe the newts (also protected) that saved the day, but which ever - well done!!!!

The only people who were actually in favour of this plan, the bookies etc, belong to the “spiv” elements of society. Fred Done and his cronies are the only ones shedding any tears at this sensible outcome.

Mark South: the greenbelt land is unavailable to us mere mortals, only the elite and their friends are allowed on it so they can shoot birds at weekends. One thing Peel Holdings did promise though was they would open up the remaining land with footpaths and nature reserves, which does contradict their killing of birds policy.

My uncle was stopped many years ago from wandering onto the land to which he replied to a farmer "and what did you do in the war to fight for the freedom of your country". The farmers were exempt from going to war so they could keep food available

There seems to be people commenting that hate Peel just because they are rich and powerfull. These are the same people that revere the Victorian architecture that is the product of the Peels of that time. They too used their wealth and power to exert influence. Peoples blind hatred of big buisness is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. This would have been a huge investment in the area, creating job and improvements in the road system.

Salford council are happy to take credit for Media City being developed in Salford, however that would not be possible without the finance from Peel. The councils achievements over the past 20 years, outside of the Quays has been abismal. Salford has been left with huge swathes of urban decay created in a time of economic boom, god help us during this time of depression. To then refuse a massive injection of investment at this time is crazy.

The fact that the most expensive properties in Salford and thereore the most wealthy residents live in this area has, in my opinion, had at least something to do with it. Had his been planned for Lower Broughton, Blackfriars or Weast the locals opinions would have counted for nothing.

Mark, it was the City of Manchester (amongst others) that objected to the Trafford Centre (and very properly so); a "Mayor of Manchester" has so far been rejected because the idea would go down like a lead balloon in places like Rochdale, Bolton and Wigan, not because there is any national animus against the idea; and there were and are far better grounds, taking the broader regional view, for putting any supercasino in Blackpool rather than Manchester. None of these things is in any way party political.

We already have racecourses at Haydock (only a 15-minute drive from the proposed site at Worsley) and Aintree - unless Mark is of the persuasion that everything of signficance in the North West must have an M postcode. The right decision has been made.

So is this "green belt" land used by the people of Salford at present? What access do they have to it, in its present condition? And anyway; racecourses are hardly ugly developments, they actually improve the outlook of an area and increase house prices - fools!!

But then again, New Labour have done their best to put "too ambitious" Manchester in its place, since they came to power. They initially tried to scupper the completion of the M60; they've tried their best to scupper the expansion of Metrolink; they blocked the supercasino; they would have blocked Manchester's 2nd runway and the Trafford Centre given the chance; they were initially very reluctant to pay for the Commonwealth Games; no new roads in Greater Manchester (MAELR etc) have been built since they came to power; Manchester now misses out on major lottery funding; and heck then there's the railways!!!

Yes John Major's Tories did far more for Manchester's INFRASTRUCTURE than New Labour, who have only been interested in making London a world city!! (New Labour also reconstituted a Greater London Authority with its own mayor - but pathetically wouldn't do the same for Greater Manchester.) New Labour have been a "disaster" for Greater Manchester!

Be careful, this is exactly what happened years ago with the Trafford Centre. Then Peel Holdings took it to the House of Lords & got it 'turned round' & accepted. Remember Peel Holdings has a lot of money to fight this & they will get it passed eventually, mark my words.

killjoys are ruining this country ,if you have more than a couple of drinks you are a "binge drinker" you're a criminal if you smoke in a public place ,and yet those who abhor something like a racecourse will drive around in gas a guzzler 4x4,well i'd rather be in a room with a smoker and a drinker than in a room with a car running because i would be dead within minutes , so who's ruining this planet most ??

What a shame,all that revenue and jobs it would have brought in.Is this the councils way of showing peel who is boss.If the council wanted this land they would have issued a compulsary purchase order and did what the want and never mind the residents.

Live 2 miles from where this monstrosity was to be built! Having suffered for the last few years from the Trafford Centre traffic this is good news. Nice to see green belt land stay out the greedy hands of Peel Holdings! No doubt they'll come back with another money making scheme!

fantastic - on what grounds, its creates much needed jobs, didnt the Trafford Centre cause a lot of traffic, typical again we luck out. They scuppered the casino now they scupper reacecourse. Get Real. How many of them have houses close to he "Green Belt Land" - typical of the local councils.
