Road collapses - again

17/ 7/2008

A MAIN road in Winton has been closed due to the collapse of a Victorian sewer.

Worsley Road has been closed between the junction with Parrin Lane and New Lane since collapsing at around 10.30am on Wednesday, July 16.

Residents and business owners say it is the third time the carriageway has collapsed in the last two years.

Ray Carty, 42, owns Carty Newsagents in Worsley Road and says everyone is sick of the recurring problem.

He said: "No one can drive through the road and last time it collapsed I might as well have not bothered opening because I lost all my morning trade.

"It took three months to fix last time, there was no urgency at all. I'm still trying to get compensation from last time which was about six months ago.

"You're just losing money all the time and it's going to turn into a ghost town again, these small businesses are struggling enough as it is."

Tony Smith, who lives in Worsley Road, added: "It keeps happening - but why? It was down for 16 weeks last time but they were supposed to have fixed it.

"There's peoples' businesses at stake here - inconvenient is not the word."

Access to the road is currently being maintained for residents and diversions will be in place from Thursday, July 17 an will take in Parrin Lane, Monton Road, Halfedge Lane, Gilda Brook Road, Bentcliffe Way, Corporation Road, Church Street and Liverpool Road (A57).

A council spokesperson said: "It is not sure how long the diversion will last.  Investigations are taking place to determine the exact nature of the collapse and how long it will take to complete any repairs."

David Allen, site manager for Balfour Beaty Utility Solutions Ltd, said: "We're currently digging down to do another repair on it.

"In the last two digs we couldn't clean it out because it caused more damage but now we've been backed into a corner we need to get the water levels inside it down and do a full structural survey to see about lining it.

"If we can't do that it might mean relaying the whole sewer."

A United Utilities spokesperson said: "We apologise because we recognise how frustrating this is for residents and traders and we will complete repairs as soon as possible."
