Worsley Festival’s popular concert on the green has been cancelled amid rumours that it was being ditched in favour of a boxing match.
Organiser Councillor Karen Garrido said over 30 people objected an application for a premises licence because they mistakenly thought the village green was being turned into a sporting arena.
She said: "The application came from the council and was meant to be a permanent one so we could hold the concert every year and not have to apply for an annual temporary licence.
"However, the wording of the licence is quite specific, and has by law to outline all the kinds of large-scale event that could take place, and that includes boxing.
"When we put up public notices in the village and in the newspapers, I suspect some people only saw the words ‘boxing’ and immediately wrote off to the council in protest.
"I can’t say for definite that a boxing tournament will never be held in the vicinity, but I think it’s a fairly safe bet that the green is not going to be turned into Madison Square Gardens.
"Because the environmental health department got so many letters of objection, they withdrew the application and that means we can’t have the concert.
"Everyone is really upset about this because it is easily the most popular event in the festival. We have lost £300 which we paid on a deposit to secure the jazz band this year and lost the chance to make in the region of £1,500 which we made at last year’s concert.
"This was money which was used to fund Christmas events in the village such as the lights and Santa’s visit on a canal barge.
"Ironically, some of the people who objected this year have since approached me and said they wouldn’t have written letters if they’d known the licence was for the jazz concert.
"Unfortunately, it is too late to sort the problem out for this year and we had to pull the plug."
The festival runs from Monday, July 14 to Sunday, August 3 and will still include a wide range of events, at Worsley Court House, Roe Green Cricket and Social Club, trips down the Bridgewater Canal, beauty nights, Chinese food tasting night and Worsley Village Summer Fair, on Sunday, July 27.
For tickets and information contact Cllr Garrido on: 0161 794 1574 or Beryl Henson on: 0161 794 9627 or pop into Worsley Library between 10am and 1pm on Fridays.
Councillor Keith Mann, Salford City Council’s lead member for environment, said: "We’re assisting Councillor Garrido and her team in getting the necessary permissions for the outdoor programme of events that will make up this year’s Worsley Village Summer Festival and we’re confident that they will all be able to go ahead as planned.
"The fact that some the outdoor events are now spread over two weeks allows us to explore the use of different licensing tools.
"The full list of events can be seen at www.visitsalford.info."

After all a concert will be much noisier than people leaving the pub.
Live with it Mrs Garrido that's what the businesses you tried to destroy had to do.

Got an opinion you want to share?
And do not forget this was a weekly occurance - not 1 day a year geared towards families coming together as a community.
I am by no means political, but I find it a great shame that people are glad such a great event has been cancelled just because they do not like Karen Garrido! Karen has done an excellent job in the past for Worsley and if more people put the same effort into it as she does we would have a much closer community.
P.S. Join the fight to bring the concert back by joining the group on Facebook 'bring back the BBQ on the green (worsley)'.
