Masterpieces to fetch £2M

8/ 5/2008

FOUR Lowry masterpieces are expected to fetch more than £2m at auction.

Among major works being sold by Christie’s next month is a famous painting entitled Manchester City Versus Sheffield United, which could make between £700,000 and £1m.

Another piece expected to make between £700,000 and £1m is entitled An Old Church and was painted by the Salford artist in 1943.

The painting was recently discovered but has not been seen in public since the 1940s, when it was bought by the present owner from the artist’s London agents.

Lowry’s painting A Cricket Match - which he completed in 1952 - has not been seen in public for more than a decade and is expected to make between £600,000 and £800,000.

Another painting entitled The Sea is expected to fetch between £180,000 and £250,000.

Lowry painted sea scenes many times during his career and this work was bought soon after completion in 1944 before it passed to the present owner.

Rachel Hidderley, of Christie’s modern British picture department, said all paintings show Lowry at the peak of his powers - but Manchester City Versus Sheffield United particularly grabbed her attention.

She said: "Manchester City Versus Sheffield United is from a small and important group of paintings in which Lowry records an actual event rather than a composite image of different locations or impressions.

"The date of the work, combined with the title, suggests that the match depicted is Manchester City’s 3-2 home win against Sheffield United on October 22, 1938."

Other works by Lowry being offered for sale include Teenagers, painted in 1961 and estimated to fetch between £25,000 and £35,000, and

Father And Son, which was painted in 1961 and is estimated to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000.
