D-Day for councillors at polls

1/ 5/2008

CANDIDATES vying for a seat on the city council will be biting their nails today (Thursday) as the city goes to the polls.

Voters in all 20 wards will have the chance to cast their vote to decide which party will lead the council.

The wards are: Barton, Boothstown and Ellenbrook, Broughton, Cadishead, Claremont, Eccles, Irlam, Irwell Riverside, Kersal, Langworthy, Little Hulton, Ordsall, Pendlebury, Swinton North, Swinton South, Walkden North, Walkden South, Weaste and Seedley, Winton and Worsley. There are 132 polling stations dotted across the city, which opened at 7am this morning, and will cater for the city’s electorate of 165,215 people.

Voting closes at 10pm, after which the votes will be counted at a special event at Fit City Pendlebury, in Cromwell Road, Swinton.

As well as people who put their ballot paper in one of the 136 ballot boxes, there are also 33,000 postal voters in Salford who carefully mark their ballot papers and send it back to the council to be counted.

These will have been opened and counted in three sessions earlier this week.

And for all the in-depth reaction to the results, don’t miss the Advertiser’s election special in the May 8 issue.

Don’t forget: it’s your vote - use it.
