MP launches new affordable homes

17/ 4/2008

HAZEL Blears MP was the special guest at the grand opening of new affordable housing for the people of Salford.

The £4m development of 37 flagship family homes, Asten Fold, in Duchy, were developed by Space New Living, part of Great Places Housing Group.

They were built in partnership with Salford City Council, Salix Homes and Bardsley Construction, as part of the Manchester Salford Housing Market Renewal Programme.

The development is the outcome of years of public consultation.

Residents whose former homes were bought for redevelopment were involved in the design process.

They named the estate Asten Fold, in memory of Asten Lowes Farm, which used to occupy the site before it was built on with housing that became unpopular and was demolished.

Ms Blears, MP for Salford and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, toured the development.

After calling in on residents she spoke to guests at a lunch reception at nearby Height Methodist Church Hall, Irlams o’th’ Height.

She said: "Everyone I’ve met has talked to me about how much their lives have changed. You can’t buy that.

"If you change only bricks and mortar, 10 years later you will be back where you started.

"The first principle is to involve people – we don’t do things to people, we do things with people.

"This is a great example of working in partnership."

She added: "If everyone is working together you’ve got something really strong. That’s what we do well in Salford."

Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
