Young hero Ben saves his sister

FUN and adventure are part and parcel of the school holidays, but for one brave boy, a trip to the park to feed the ducks left him a hero.

Eight-year-old Ben Casey, and his two-year-old sister, Rose, were in Clifton Country Park with their mum, Tambria Shepherd, when disaster struck.

Ben and Rose were playing close to the lake while their mum took some family photos.

Rose slipped head first into the water and without hesitation, big brother Ben jumped in to save her.

Ben, who attends St Charles RC Primary School, said: "We were near the big pond and Rose was messing with some sticks and she just slipped in head first.

"I shouted my mum straight away but I couldn't be bothered to wait and just jumped in and grabbed her.

"The water was cold, and I hurt my knee on some stones in the bottom, but it’s OK now."

And although the weather may have been surprisingly cold for April, this was not enough to put the kids off their ice cream.

Mum Tambria, who lives with her family in Reginald Street, Swinton, said: "We had to phone daddy straight away and tell him.

"Everybody was looking at us as we walked through the park as we looked a bit silly, Ben with my jacket on, Rose wearing his jumper and them both soaking wet.

"Rose just kept asking for an ice cream so I took them to McDonald’s and then we went home and ate the ice creams in the bath.

"It’s just one of those things that sort of happens and then you get over it. I'm very proud of Ben though."

Dad Dave Casey added: "It put a tear to my eye when I heard.

"I was so proud about the fact he didn't even hesitate, he jumped straight in and pulled her to the side.

"Afterwards, they looked like a pair of drowned rats."

As a treat for his bravery, hero Ben was taken bowling for the day.
