Trust’s Councillor prepares for role as next Mayor of city

27/ 3/2008

THE chairman of Salford Royal foundation trust is stepping down after 10 years working for the health authority to become the city’s next mayor.

Margaret Morris, who is currently deputy mayor and councillor for Winton, will assume Councillor Val Burgoyne’s current role as mayor for Salford in May and will step down as chairman of the trust at the end of June.

Councillor Morris, who has worked for Trafford and Salford health authorities since 1998 and joined the foundation trust in 2006, has been an important figurehead in the NHS, helping bring Salford Royal its outstanding achievements in quality of service over the years.

Cllr Morris, who trained as a nurse in the army, has worked in Salford hospitals since 1969, became a councillor in 1991 and went on to the Salford community health council in 1996 said she has ‘always had a passionate interest in healthcare’.

The Advertiser can reveal that Cllr Morris saw her annual allowance rise to £41,000 a year, after the hospital gained foundation status in 2006 and she earns £9,573 allowance as a ward councillor.

In the lead up to her departure, she says she is proud of her contribution to upholding the high standards of Salford’s healthcare.

She said: "I’m really proud that 50 per cent of people employed in our workforce are local people - we were the first force to bring our catering and cleaning staff back in house.

"Secondly, we provide the best performing health care in Manchester and one of the best performing hospitals in the country.

"Thirdly, we have an excellent chief executive and board and all the staff including doctors and nurses, have a shared vision for the care of both patients and staff.

"I am confident that Jim Potter who will take my place as chairman, will go on from strength to strength.

"In my role as deputy mayor I have met some really fantastic people so I’m really looking forward to taking on my new role as the mayor."

She'll get £18,369 on top of the basic allowance of £9,810. For the last year she's been getting an extra £4,425 for being Deputy Mayor.
