Plans hatched for a top-class golf course
13/ 3/2008
PROPOSALS for a new world-class golf course in Salford have been revealed.
The 18 hole, par 72 championship course would include a clubhouse and practice ground on the north side of the Bridgewater Canal on land close to the M60 near Worsley.
The course would be part of Peel Holdings’ existing plans to develop Salford’s Forest Park and would be part of a £100m leisure park which would include a horse-racing track, 6,000 seat grandstand and a hotel.
If planning permission is given this summer it will go to a public inquiry due to its size and green belt location.
However, the enquiry would not be held for at least a year and then, if approved, the scheme would take another three years to build.
Councillor Derek Antrobus, lead member for planning at Salford City Council said: "The application falls within a greenbelt area where development is not normally allowed so it will be very carefully considered later in the year."
However, ambitious plans from Peel to try and bring the Ryder Cup to the golf course have been dismissed by many as far fetched, with the course still in the planning stages.
