Councillor Warmisham is entitled to make these comments to open up an area of debate. Whilst I may not agree with him entirely,he does make valid points. The issue of cost and the monopoly of supply by certain schools being serious issues. However, the comments of the Principal of the Academy are ridiculous. I wasn't aware a school needed a "corporate identity". Surely if a school has to have a uniform it should represent the school and the area it serves. The uniform of Salford City Academy does neither. The logo is obviously nothing to do with Salford and was probably designed at great expense by a P.R company that wouldn't dream of visiting the area. As for the comments regarding "hoodies", perhaps these were meant for Daily Mail readers in a completely different debate!

"I've never seen the point of uniforms..." What! Cllr Warmisham continues to embarrass himself (and the council) with his ignorant comments. Parents and teachers (and most pupils) would agree that uniforms are essential to maintain standards and good behaviour both in school and the surrounding community. Wearing a uniform gives a child a sense of pride and identity. All young people, whatever their circumstances, can be equal. Uniforms are not costly. They are very affordable and excellent value for money ~ considering they are worn every day. He suggests that limits are put in place such as wearing â€~sensible shoesâ€TM (otherwise known as school shoes!) so wouldnâ€TMt teachers have to spend precious teaching time ensuring that 'sensible shoes' are being worn as opposed to £100 trainers or some other expensive footwear? Abolishing the uniform would create a nightmare for school staff having to work out dress codes, given the endless combinations of clothes available. Cllr Warmisham clearly knows very little about children and education~ a very worrying fact given his position on the Council!

Give him the sack!!! Never heard such rubbish in all my life. Kids to wear smart casual clothes for School open your eyes the kids that I see walking around wear all black hoodies and tracky bottoms what impression does that give. You can get School shirts pack of 2 for £4 trousers etc. doesn't have to cost the earth. The pressure would be on kids to wear branded shoes and clothes and would certainly cause more problems than we need in our Salford Schools. Can't believe you published that pathetic man's article on the front page in the first place.

What nonsense! Councillor Warmingsham does not live in the real world. School uniforms represent fantastic value for money. Also when my children come back from a school trip they report that the poor kids who do not wear designer gear are ridiculed and bullied. This man is a buffoon who clearly does not listen to the parents in Salford. Use your vote - vote him out.

Has Councillor Warmisham visited a school recently? Does he seek the views of parents in Salford as well as those in France? In advocating the scrapping of school uniform he is contributing to the erosion of social standards which are resulting in the growth of anti-social behaviour and the random murder of 11 year olds on the streets of Manchester and Liverpool. Thatcher said there is no such thing as society - now John Warmisham says there is no such thing as community. His views are totally at odds with the role of a councillor. Uniforms dilute the gang mentality and provide a sense of belonging. How has this man become the "Council Education Boss?" This is the same man who has instigated the closure of a successful, community, namely St. George's in Little Hulton. Councillor Warmisham - friend of the Hoodie - is this his vision for 21st century education for all the pupils of Salford?

Don't have a pop at Salford Education. Its not them who have come up with this crazy idea. Its another example of a Councillor spouting off. Don't worry- I'm sure Jill Baker will dismiss this as nonsense. Its not the councillors who come up with the good ideas- it tends to be the officers who do the real work of the council and often have to clear up the mess after a politician delivers a loony soundbite to the press.

John Warmisham states that teachers are wasting to much time enforcing the school dress code. In fact the opposite is true, without a simple and clear uniformed dress code many school kids try to come up with ways to get around it. My wife is the dean of students at the school where she works, she has to constantly re-word the dress code to cover the things that kids come up with like gang colours, offensive pictures on the backs of t-shirts and jackets, not to mention jewlery and body peircings. She has been trying to pursuade the school govenors to adopt a simple uniform dress code for years but they are afraid to upset some of the little darlings. Mark my words, the teachers and parents will regret the day that they scrap school uniforms.

What they should do is emulate what they do over here in Australia whereby high school students wear a casual footy type jersey uniform and casual clothing. The jersey in the style of a rugby league top have the school logo on the front and even the name where a sponsor goes. On the back os the year of that class! They love them here.

I went to school at Halton Bank in the fifties and had to wear a uniform. I now live in Arizona, USA, the schools in the town I live in are starting to require students to wear uniforms because of the cost to parents for their children wanting to keep up with the "Jones" and wear the latest fashions. The school districts have negotiated with the likes of WalMart to give parents a break on the cost of purchasing the rquired clothing. Tom Morrow

so does this mean pupils can turn up for school in £150 trainers like the big i am what about the kids who cant afford them i think this will be another reason why the less well off will be bullied thanks once again salford education perhaps you should go back to school and learn to leave well enough alone .and instead of worrying what the kids wear in school you should be worrying what thay do out of school
