An eye in the sky?
Ailsa Cranna6/ 3/2008
SALFORD could put a spoke in Manchester’s Eye with a bigger ferris wheel becoming a permanent fixture on the city’s skyline.
Fairground boss Henry Hill says he has been in talks with city leisure chiefs about setting up a big wheel - possibly at Salford Quays.
Richard,
You say you are a Christian conservative on your comments posted on the Prestwich Advertiser site

Richard you must proceed with this, however, you are probably too late for this May.
Standing next May would be one in 'the eye' for John Merry and the crazy gang.

My destiny lies in the House of Commons. I have no objection to standing as a candidate to become a councillor in Salford in principle, though to do so does not feature in my current plans, unless a popular movement of Salfordians requested me to undertake to stand. I am not presently a member of any political party so the only basis upon which I could stand for Salford Council would be as an Independent and, as I said, I would only do that if enough people 'pushed' me to go for it. I think I'd do a good job as a Salford councillor (and I wouldn't claim any of the expenses to serve as such on point of principle) but that's not a good enough reason by itself to stand... there'd have to be a popular call from the people to come forth and serve them. Though I have many private supporters this 'body of people' has yet to coalesce into the sort of structure that would be conducive to a successful candidacy. So I think the suggestion is good but the timing isn't yet right, not least because of everything else going on in my life. However I'd be honoured to serve Salfordians as a councillor if and when enough people 'demand that I stand'!

Mr Carvath sould run for councillor at the next election. He generally has some good ideas but I'm not sure he has enough forward vision. Salford is slowly shedding it's dour reputation through investment into projects such as the Quays, Media City, Salford Port, and the plans for Chapel Street. Yes- lots more needs to be done but regardless of which political party is in charge people will complain at the leadership (the tories are always under fire in trafford). I'm no leftie but I am pleased with the efforts of the council to try to shed its Dirty Old Town reputation.

A stupid, pointless and ridiculous 'white elephant' proposal that can bring no possible benefit to ordinary Salfordians who are more interested in the state of schools, hospitals, roads etcetera. It would be a monumental waste of public money. When will we see the back of Salford Labour fools running our Council who even consider such idiotic ideas when there is such great and pressing need for sound financial management and responsible administration in this city?

I should make three points about the word "conservative":
(1) in Christian terms, 'conservative' denotes that I hold to orthodox 'conservative' theology and interpretations of the Bible - as opposed to 'liberal theology';
(2) in political terms much of my core political ideology is reasonably attributable to traditional right-of-centre 'conviction politics' conservatism. [I am essentially a trad Tory in the mould of W.C. (but bang up to date for 2008!)]
(3) For the record I should state that I am not a member of the Conservative Party (although I have previously and briefly been a member). Indeed I am not presently a member of any political party.
