U-turn into a controversy?
Exclusive by Kathryn Ryan14/ 2/2008
ST GEORGE'S RC High School could now be merged with St Ambrose Barlow after the council performed a major U-turn - but walked headlong into another potential controversy.
After a year of campaigning by pupils, parents and teachers, and just over a week before a planned protest march against the school’s closure, the council have bowed to public pressure and revised their plans.
However, the proposed site for the new amalgamated school was rejected by the council last year as a location for the proposed rebuild of Walkden High School.
Sorry Jason what are you talking about?
Give us a clue... do you want a city for the 21st century or a 19th century robert roberts?

Our beloved elected will have a new proposal next week. A Catholic school on the Cathedral Site. Seemingly a great idea to them. Forget Wardley, Leary, it's not Hallowed ground, Roll back the years, I think Little Hulton pupils will be travelling to Manchester for an education..............
Hopeless Political Gerrymandering. You can only play with borders fo0r so long Councillor and I know that more than most with my pedigree

How much will the Wardley site cost? Wetlands. Concrete rafts. Green belt. Feasible?

A public inquiry might well be a sensible idea in principle but what chance of that when Merry and Warmisham can't even manage a public meeting?!

The top and bottom of the whole Salford BSF fiasco, is that they have got it badly wrong on most counts.
I don't know anyone who does'nt want better education/schools for our children, but the whole planning process is a shambles.
"Consultation" ....don't make me laugh. The only consultation that goes on is between themselves, and then they TELL us what they have decided.
Bad decision after bad decision. Keep digging Salford City Council, the hole you are in just keeps on getting deeper and deeper.
Maybe as has previously been suggested, a public inquiry should be held to sort this mess out once and for all !

Jimmy, which part of Salford is not subject to destruction due to the inept decisions of our elected? Educational decisions being ‘cut and pasted’, altered and doctored on a regular basis.
There’s No ‘Hope’ for the Quays…
‘St. Paddy’ thinks his boat’s come in with a rebuild…
‘St. Lawrence’s…’ oops…(what’s it called now)…gets another chance with a rebuild…Is this to be a ‘Weaste’ of Space?
By ‘George’, what do they think of this new twist in the electoral ‘Ward’ of Swinton? ‘Harrop’ should ‘Fold’ but is seen as a Beacon of Success….
‘Walkden’ walking a few paces, seemingly to disgruntle local voters, is madness.
To quote directly from our City’s Website ‘…The city’s record in our secondary schools is one of continuous improvement…’ If this is the case, why such a radical change? Am I the only one to question this strange concoction of madness being conjured up in the dark side of Cabinet life?
PFI is nothing but a shameful reflection of Salford’s inadequate, incapable and insensitive leadership.
Am not surprised you are moving on. We are having ‘The Doors’ slammed in our faces. Why do children need to travel to the Quays from my homeland, Weaste, for an educational chance? Is The Quays really an ‘Oasis’ for these pupils? I ‘Trust’ not!

Who is more a fool?
The fool or the fool who follows the fool?
Rob, keep fighting! More foolish actions by our elected puppets are merely helping the be toppled at the next election.
Latest Odds
3/1 fav. Mr harte for having a fervent passion for what matters - our future. 4/1 Rob Rigby - sensitive about his local area
8ooo/1 presently in post 'Monster raving Labour Party'

I was deeply concerned regarding my future In Salford. As a single professional person I have been perturbed by the plans to build a Salford secondary school on the Quays, Hope high school / Oasis Academy.
The Quays is a great place to live until the summer time when my neighbours and I are subjected to a great deal of anti-social behaviour perpetrated by gangs of menacing, feral youngsters of school age who invade our pleasant living and working environment. These Salford kids will be such a shock to the hundreds of BBC staff moving to Media City from London. The thought of a new Hope High Academy on my doorstep fills me with horror. The Council are acting extremely irresponsibly by building this school on the Quays.
This month I sold my apartment and will soon be living in South Manchester. I am the first of many to flee the quays to avoid the blight of a Salford City Council school on my doorstep. Good luck BBC - are you bringing Crimewatch with you?

Well well signs that John Merry and the crazy gang are actually listening to the electorate! Or have they simply paniced in the face of the four school girls and brought in some overly paid public relations adviser.
Cynical?
Well it is February only about ten weeks to the local elections where the crazy gang could have been blown away by the justice girls.
So why not offer a compromise - but make sure it all falls down at the end of May - oh no it's green belt land. Sorry George's, sorry girls, sorry Ambrose Barlow - never mind back to the drawing board - you are closing George's. Bye bye kids!
Politics eh? Unbelievable or is it?

Unfortunately Salford Council has a poor record on promises made to the secondary sector in education. Hope High School was promised a rebuild with PFI money, then there wasn't enough so Hope was left out in the cold. Furthermore, Hope was told that a rebuild on their existing site wasn't possible - but wait, now Salford are proposing to rebuild All Hallow's on the Hope site. What has changed?

I agree that this is by no means a cut and dried solution. But shouldn't we be glad that discussion is still going on with alternatives being suggested? I have seen so much here about 'consultation' not being listened to - well, it appears that it is being listened to. Shouldn't we be giving that a cautious welcome? The business of this leading into yet another 'controversy' just shows how complicated democracy is - you can't please all the people all the time! Let's at least hope a considered debate can take place on this.

Wise words from the Salford schoolchildrens' champion Councillor Lindley. I smell a rat too and translate the post as saying something like: "Watch out for this latest ploy by the Labour Cabinet, it's a diversionary tactic and a con trick leading into a dead end. Don't be fooled; they want the Diocese to compromise and concede something; carry on the fight to protect all of Salford's existing Catholic High schools." As St. George's motto would have it, continue to "Fight the Good Fight!"
