The big picture: great outdoors
Conrad Astley17/ 2/2006
Work by an artist who uses the natural world as his canvas is being shown next week in Tatton Park. Conrad Astley looked at the exhibition.
A RARE opportunity to see work by a renowned international
artist, combined with a day out in the country, is being offered
over the half term.
Cheshire-born sculptor and photographer Andy Goldsworthy uses
natural substances such as rocks and branches as his raw
materials.
And although his work has been displayed in New York's Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the San
Jose Museum of Art in California, a more recent commission brought
him closer to home.
The artist spent several weeks working in Tatton Park at the end of
last year, and photographs showing his creations in the Cheshire
park, along with examples of his work in more far-flung locations,
are being displayed there next week.
The artist, who created an exhibition called Snowballs in Summer
which was shown at London's Courtauld Institute of Art, made
several sculptures in the park using sheets of ice.
The week-long exhibition is being organised to launch Tatton Park's
oneplace arts programme, which will run until 2008 and include a
number of exhibitions from up-and-coming artists.
A series of artists in residence will interpret the park's
landscape over the next few months. Rob Vale, from Ramsbottom, will
come up with his own take on the park using film and dance, while
Sheffield's Helen Brigham will do the same using craft, fine art
and photography.
Steve Chettle from ARTS UK, curating the oneplace project, said the
association with Andy Goldsworthy was a great coup for the
organisers.
"The project is already attracting a lot of excitement," he said.
"Tickets for a talk by Andy Goldsworthy in January sold out within
two days and we have had a great deal of interest from potential
artists and the local community."
A Glimpse of Andy Goldsworthy opens at Tatton Park on
Saturday (February 18) and runs until February 26. The free
exhibition is being housed in the Mansion Stewards Room, which will
be open from 11am-4pm, but will be closed on Monday. More events
will be held later in the year.
