The big picture: but is it art?
Conrad Astley20/ 1/2006
A new exhibition aims to take the mystery out of the strange world of modern art. Conrad Astley took a look.
UNMADE beds and sharks in tanks of formaldehyde - is it really
art?
A new exhibition at the Lowry will allow viewers to make up their
own minds about what many consider to be the strange world of
modern art.
Revelation: Reflecting British Art in the Arts Council Collection,
features works of some of Britain's most infamous and controversial
artists.
Visitors to the centre may know the names and have read articles
about them in newspapers but may never have had the chance to see
what they've actually produced.
The exhibition is a retrospective of the last 25 years, showing
work by artists such as Tracey Emin, Lucien Freud, Tony Cragg and
Paula Rego.
It is intended to give the visitor the opportunity to investigate
trends in modern art, while showing work by some of the last
quarter of a century's most influential British figures.
The collection includes photography, sculpture, ceramics, video,
and etchings.
Along with older paintings like Paula Rego's Sleeping, Euan Uglow's
The Quarry Pignano and Leon Kossoff's Children's Swimming Pool,
there will be more recent works including Tracey Emin's The Simple
Truth, Gilbert and George's Smash and Turner Prize nominee Jim
Lambie's Sid Vicious.
The exhibition's arrival in Salford is intended to coincide with
the British Art Show, coming to Manchester next week.
That show encourages visitors to compare works on display with
those at seven other venues across the city, and to see it in a
wider context.
