The big picture: winter celebrations
Conrad Astley16/12/2005
The weather outside may be frightful, but a new exhibition of paintings is so delightful. Conrad Astley looked at work dedicated to winter in a Manchester bar.
IT'S cold outside - so wrap up warm and take a look at a new
exhibition inviting you to celebrate the winter season.
As the temperatures plummet, ice has to be scraped off windscreens,
and weather forecasters warn us of the worst winter in decades, a
set of paintings inspired by the season are going on display.
And what better way to enjoy them than sitting with a nice warming
pint or two?
Beyond Winter... Imagined Landscapes is being held in the upstairs
gallery area of the Dukes 92 bar in Castlefield.
It features the work of Macclesfield-based artists Julie Hamer and
Richard Turner, whose abstract styles fit the winter theme
perfectly.
Many of the paintings feature cold, stark colours to conjure up
images of the season, while others present warmer yellows and
golds, looking forward to the eventual leap into spring.
Alongside the more traditional paintings are Julie Hamer's mono
prints, created by rolling inks onto a flat surface before
transferring the image onto paper.
Both artists create abstract works based around landscapes.
Knutsford- born Julie tries to sum up the atmosphere of the Peak
District. Richard Turner, who enjoyed a successful musical career
before becoming a full-time artist, having studied at the Vienna
Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music, uses various
techniques to create abstract images inspired by landscapes,
seascapes, dancing figures and musical forms.
The exhibition has been organised by Sylvia Swiffin who runs Art In
The City - a web gallery used to promote North West artists. The
not-for-profit organisation now has 55 artists on its directory,
arranges regular exhibitions and sponsors the degree show for
Manchester Metropolitan University's embroidery department, while
the website recently received its millionth visitor.
Sylvia said: "We're very quietly sponsoring and supporting the
Manchester art scene. By holding exhibitions in a pub we're also
introducing art to people who wouldn't normally go to a gallery.
We're on a mission."
