Art from behind bars

THE work on display includes pieces of poetry and prose, as well
as paintings, sculptures, and computer art created by inmates from
all 16 North West jails, including the former Strangeways and Styal
women's prison in Cheshire.
It will be shown in an exhibition for two days, before a panel of
judges picks the best.
Prizes will be granted during a special award ceremony, with £100
for the winners of each category, and smaller amounts given to
runners-up.
Where the inmates have not been given permission to attend the
ceremony, special arrangements will be made to visit them in prison
and present the awards.
The exhibition is intended to give the public an insight into the
skills some prisoners have, as well as boosting the offenders'
confidence in their abilities.
It is being staged by the Co-operative Group.
Cash raised will go towards rehabilitating North West offenders or
reducing crime.
Chief executive Martin Beaumont said: "This unique exhibition will
give all categories of prisoners in the North West an opportunity
to show how their creative talents have been nurtured in
prison.
"The prisons involved are doing an excellent job in encouraging
these skills and we are extremely grateful to them, The Lowry, Arts
and Business in the North West and Business in the Community for
their help and support in making the exhibition possible."
The exhibition is being displayed at the Lancaster Suite in
New Century House on Corporation Street, from 10am-2pm May 25-26.
