Questionnaire: Adrian Dickson
by Ewen Storm14/ 4/2005
What would be your perfect day? My perfect day
is a random day! Take last weekend for example, I had been working
really hard so I was looking forward to my day off. I woke up, my
friend came round with breakfast. Then we went for a walk where we
met some other friends and went shopping. After that we decided we
should all go on a road trip, so we went to a car dealer's, and
bought a van, there and then - this eight-seater thing. It was
fantastic. I had no idea at the beginning of the day that things
would end up like that, so that's my kind of perfect day.
What is your greatest extravagance? Well right now
I'm deeply in debt because in a moment of craziness I bought an
eight-seater van!
What is the most exciting thing you've ever received
through the post? I don't know about exciting, but the
most amusing thing was a pair of knickers! A viewer had very kindly
written to me, telling me that I was her favourite TV presenter. I
didn't write back though.
What's your idea of a perfect meal? Well I am of
the generation of meat pie and chips for lunch at school. Every
day. You'd think that I would be sick of them by now but no - meat
pie, chips, Yorkshire pudding and gravy - all on one plate. Oh, and
you can add a steak to that if you want.
What vehicle, if any, do you own? Have I told you
about this van?
What's the first job you ever had? Dressing up in
character costumes at Thorpe Park. It was only mildly embarrassing
as no-one could tell who was inside. However, children seemed to
like kicking these characters and therefore us inside the costumes.
Usually they went for the knee, sometimes it was a bit
higher.
What is the oldest item of clothing you still
wear? Nothing of my own but I recently bought a pair of
80s Converse shoes - they're pretty old.
Whom do you love? I really love my mum and dad. So
I bought them a holiday. They really helped me out when I started
on TV and radio so it's the least I can do. If I were Michael Owen
they'd own their street by now.
Whom, or what, do you hate? Forms. Why do we have
to have forms? I need to take on a professional form filler.
What newspapers or magazines do you read? I used
to like Heat. I don't any more. It seems it's all about how
fat/thin, orange/pale, pregnant/non-pregnant people are, rather
than a brilliant round-up of the week's entertainment news, which
it used to be. As for newspapers I generally get a couple of
tabloids every day.
What's your favourite book? Prepare to be
underwhelmed! "How To Start A Web Business". I'm just starting a
new company - NeedAShowreel.com where wannabe TV presenters can
have their showreels made professionally.
What's your favourite TV programme? Scrapheap
Challenge USA! It's fantastic. Really macho television, makes me
feel extremely manly!
What was the first record you ever bought? Michael
Jackson "Dangerous". He really was at the top of his game then and
truly was an amazing performer. His music was people's soundtrack
for a generation and I was no exception.
What is your favourite journey? I absolutely love
driving through the Lakes. I take my car up there and throw it
around all the little country roads. The scenery really is quite
magnificent and the complete antidote to the madness of Manchester.
I first went to Windermere as a child and as I got out of the car I
remember thinking how clean the air was - it took my breath
away!
What is your ultimate ambition? I feel pretty
lucky to have realised one of my major life ambitions, which was to
become a television and radio host - you really can't beat the
excitement of presenting a live show, the adrenalin rush is
amazing.
If you could be anyone else, who would it be? Well
he's no longer with us, but Howard Hughes. To be him in his early
years would be a fantastic experience - he had a meticulous
attention to detail like me, he was part of the Hollywood film
industry in the most exciting era ever. To live in Hollywood in the
1920s and soak up the atmosphere would be a dream.
