LEGEND: Stella Grundy plays Velvet Underground muse Nico
THEATRE: Nico Icon Play, Lowry, from Wed 12 Nov
Lauren Steadman5/11/2008
EVER since Shelagh Delaney wrote A Taste of Honey in the Fifties, Salford has been a hotbed of theatrical talent.
Work by the current crop of dramatists will be celebrated in a new season at the Lowry led by volunteer-led theatre group Studio Salford.
Nico Icon Play debuted to glowing reviews and was nominated for two MEN Theatre Awards last year.
Charting the troubled life story of Christa Paffgen (known as Nico), model, actress and singer with The Velvet Underground, it explores the glamour, hedonism and coldness of the Warhol years through to the drug addiction and squalor of the 1980s,.
Using live music, film and theatre, it chronicles Nico’s meeting and close friendship with Manchester Svengali Alan Wise and her attempts to re-establish herself as a credible artist, revealing the dark humour and tragedy of Eighties urban Britain through Nico’s eyes.
Stella Grundy of Nineties Manc indie band Intastella stars, while British rock singer Arthur Brown – best known as ‘the God of Hellfire’ – makes a guest appearance. To book ring 0870 220 2003 or see www.thelowry.com. Tickets cost £5 or £10, while a Studio season ticket for all 10 shows costs just £40.
