MUSIC: Elbow, Apollo, 23 and 30 October

IT'S been a long time in coming, but the Elbow story is at last shifting from soap opera to fairytale ending.

Last month, the band were awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize for their brilliant fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid.

It was a decision which took almost everyone by surprise – bookies calling it the biggest shock in the history of the Mercury Prize.

Of course, the only people who weren’t shocked were the band’s loyal supporters – many of them right here in Manchester.

Emerging from Bury in the late Nineties, Elbow’s career journey has been a rollercoaster, enduring professional and personal woes – they have been dropped twice by big record labels and suffered broken hearts and bereavements.

But over the course of four superb albums, they have cemented their status as Manchester’s most gloriously romantic band – their songs are full of adventure, heart and, most of all, a romantic belief that good things lie just around the corner.

Elbow’s homecoming gigs will be the perfect end to a (much deserved) fairytale year.
