CLASSICAL: Proms In The Park, Buile Hill Park, Salford, Sat 13 Sep

SALFORD’S Buile Hill Park may not be as rarefied a venue as London’s Royal Albert Hall – but pomp, pageantry and pride are bound to be in plentiful supply as the Proms comes up north.

The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany local lad Russell Watson as he performs a five-song set list.

He says he’s "incredibly excited" about the concert.

"I think for every artist there is something special about performing in your home town," he adds. "With the events of the last 12 months in mind, I know it is going to be an extra-special evening."

The performance is packed with rousing classics bound to get the crowd on their feet and the Union Jacks flying, including the famous ode to Britain’s green and pleasant land, Jerusalem, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Overture 1812.

More modern standards also feature heavily in the schedule, with renditions of Coates’ Dambusters March, Styne’s Don’t Rain on My Parade, Gershwin’s Girl Crazy and Loewe’s I Could Have Danced.

Salford City Council has teamed up with the BBC to offered 4,000 discounted tickets costing just £7.50 to Salford residents. Predictably, these have all now sold out.

But organisers say there are plenty of normal priced tickets left – and at £20 a pop the event promises a value for money experience enjoying some of the world’s best-known classical music played by the UK’s most accomplished musicians.
