REVIEW: Frank Sinatra @ Palace Theatre

9/ 6/2008

FRANK Sinatra, as we all know, was a man fond of extravagance and opulence. With that in mind, Ol' Blue Eyes would surely have fond much to admire in the Sinatra tribute show which played at the Palace Theatre for six packed-out dates.

Ten years since Sinatra's death, and the producers of this show pulled out all the stops to ensure the man's music and spirit lives on.

This was an epically assembled Sinatra show which spared no expense – we were treated to a sixteen-piece band, ten dancer-singers, and plenty of archive performance footage of Sinatra himself.

Using the latest digital film and stage technology, the footage of Sinatra blended perfectly with the live band, making the audience feel as though they were in the company of the great crooner himself.

Although endorsed by Sinatra's family, this was a celebration of Sinatra's music and life which wasn't afraid to delve into the dark times. Archive film footage told the story of Sinatra's life in chronological order, from his many marriages to his alleged involvement with organised crime and political associations with John F Kennedy.

A very complex, sometimes selfish man Sinatra was, but what prevails most is the music and that incredible voice.

The songs come thick and fast – from 'Come Fly With Me' to 'My Way' – each done great justice thanks to a brilliant band and vibrant dance troupe.

The overall effect is sort of pop concert-meets-musical show-meets multi-media extravaganza, full of glitz and spectacle. Sinatra would have loved it.
