DRAMA: Metamorphosis, Lowry, until Saturday 16 Feb

13/ 2/2008

NICK Cave seems like a particularly good choice of pop star to create the music for a production of Kafka’s melancholic story, Metamorphosis.

The Czech author’s unsettling take on 20th century alienation has been an inspiration to many musicians, but Cave’s gothic image seems particularly well-suited to Kafka’s themes.

The touring Lyric Hammersmith production, made in conjunction with experimental Icelandic company Vesturport, tells the story of Gregor Samsa, an insurance clerk who lives a dull life until he wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a very large dung beetle.

Gregor’s mundane existence is thrown into turmoil, and his surreal attempts to live a normal life are both tragic and hilarious.

His plight is displayed, along with Cave’s pre-recorded score, by the inventive use of a gravity-defying, split- level stage combined with a daring physicality from the cast.
