JOHNNY Rotten – is he an anarchist? Or is he a children’s TV wildlife presenter?

The last time the British public saw the Sex Pistols frontman on our screens was when he presented a wildlife show for Channel 5 entitled John Lydon Goes Ape – a family wildlife programme which cashed in on Lydon’s notoriety post–I’m A Celebrity.

Yes - that’s right: the man who tried to bring down the monarchy with his band The Sex Pistols, the man who infamously said the ‘F’ word on national television in the seventies – Johnny Rotten was now officially a kids presenter! Whichever way you look at it, it’s fair to say there always has been a bit of a comical pantomime dame quality to Johnny Rotten.

He was an anarchist, but he was always an anarchist who played out like a cartoon rebel. He was a profane, vulgar, cantankerous thorn in the side of the establishment.

2007 sees the thirtieth anniversary of their seminal album Nevermind The Bollocks, and it’s an occasion which certainly deserves a mighty fanfare.

They may have made only one album before their acrimonious split early in 1978 but their musical and cultural legacy has loomed over alternative music ever since.

Noel Gallagher has said Oasis would never have existed without The Sex Pistols and the demand to see The Sex Pistols perform live is still voracious.

Whether it be old punks or new punks desperate to buy into the band’s anarchic mythology, seeing The Sex Pistols still feels like a historic event.
