Annie Smith

AVID reader Mrs Annie Elizabeth Smith, of Halmont Court, Newchurch, died at Royal Blackburn Hospital last Friday after a short illness, aged 95.

Mrs Smith was born in Rossendale and lived in the Valley all her life.

Prior to her retirement, she worked as a slipper machinist at Gaghills, Waterfoot.

In her younger years she was a Scout leader; she was a keen church attendee at St Nicholas’ Church, Newchurch, and a former member of the Mothers’ Union.

She also loved crosswords and enjoyed knitting and crochet, helping to make things for St Nicholas’ over the years.

Wife of the late Wilfred Smith, she leaves her daughter Jean, son David, grandchildren Phillip, Helen and Michael, great-grandson William, son-in-law Colin, daughter-in-law Jackie, nephews Michael and John and their families, and niece Audrey and her family in Auckland, New Zealand.

Her funeral was yesterday (Thursday), when the Rev Sue Davies conducted a service at St Nicholas’ Church at 1.30pm before cremation at Burnley at 2.20pm. There were family flowers only, with donations accepted for WRVS Royal Blackburn and St Nicholas’.
